All-Weather Coupling Assistance & Early Warning System for Shunting Locomotives

OVERVIEW

微信图片_20230114150616.png

In railway shunting operations, coupling is one of the most critical yet risk-prone tasks. Under low-visibility conditions such as night, rain, snow, fog, or dust, locomotive drivers often struggle to judge the real distance to the target wagon or flatcar. Traditional methods relying on human experience, ground guidance, or simple video monitoring are no longer sufficient to meet today’s railway requirements for safety, efficiency, standardization, and traceability

To address these challenges, we offer the All-Weather Coupling Assistance & Early Warning System for Shunting Locomotives. Centered around an intelligent analysis host and integrating 4D millimeter-wave radar, HUD display, voice alerts, 5G transmission, and intelligent recognition algorithms, this solution provides all-weather, full-process, visualized assistance and active warning capabilities for shunting locomotive coupling operations. It helps customers solve the “last mile” safety challenge in shunting work.

WHY DO CUSTOMERS NEED THIS SOLUTION?

1. Coupling distance is difficult to judge in low-visibility environments

At night or in rain, snow, and fog, drivers’ visibility is severely restricted. It becomes difficult to accurately judge the real distance to the target wagon, which can lead to delayed reactions, misjudgment, or inaccurate stopping.

2. Traditional shunting operations depend too heavily on human experience

Many sites still rely on driver experience, ground staff guidance, or ordinary video feeds. In complex environments, limited visibility and coordination gaps can easily reduce efficiency and create safety risks.

3. Continuous operations increase driver fatigue and distraction

Shunting operations often run around the clock. In long-duration, repetitive, high-attention scenarios, drivers are more likely to experience fatigue, distraction, and delayed response, increasing the risk of collision, incorrect operation, or late braking.

4. Safety risks go beyond collision alone

The real risks during coupling are not limited to wagon distance. Personnel intrusion within the clearance boundary and derailers on the track can also create serious hazards. Without active detection and warning, protection remains incomplete.

5. Post-event review is difficult without a data loop

After many shunting tasks are completed, data is scattered, videos are hard to retrieve, and processes are difficult to review. This makes it harder for management teams to improve training, analyze responsibility, optimize procedures, and standardize operations.

Building a closed-loop coupling safety system with radar and intelligent analysis

The system consists of onboard and ground-side sections. The onboard section uses an intelligent analysis host as the core and integrates 4D millimeter-wave radar, HUD display, voice announcer, and 5G communication equipment to provide real-time distance measurement, target recognition, alarm display, and operation assistance. The ground section includes streaming servers and a remote monitoring client to support automatic upload, centralized storage, playback, and management of operation videos and related data.

This is not just an added camera or alarm device. It is a complete intelligent coupling assistance and early warning solution tailored for real railway shunting scenarios.

CORE CAPABILITIES

微信图片_20230114150602.png

1. Accurate all-weather ranging for harsh environments

The solution uses 4D millimeter-wave radar to precisely detect target wagons or flatcars in rain, snow, fog, and darkness, while continuously outputting stable and reliable distance data. Millimeter-wave radar offers high precision, strong penetration capability, anti-interference performance, and industrial-grade durability, making it ideal for demanding railway environments.

Customer value:

  • Reduce distance misjudgment in poor visibility

  • Improve coupling stability and controllability

  • Minimize safety incidents and efficiency losses caused by weather

2. Automatic coupling warning mode reduces operator burden

Based on radar data, the intelligent analysis host identifies the target locomotive, wagon, or flatcar and automatically enters coupling warning mode. According to different distance intervals and speed conditions, the system triggers corresponding voice prompts and warning messages, helping drivers slow down, stop at the right time, and complete safe coupling.

Customer value:

  • Shift from experience-based judgment to data-based decision-making

  • Reduce driver cognitive load in stressful working conditions

  • Improve standardization and consistency of shunting operations

3. HUD display provides key information at a glance

The system includes a HUD display that shows speed, coupling distance, and alarm information in real time, placing critical data directly in the driver’s forward field of view. This reduces the need for attention switching and enables faster, more accurate decisions.

Customer value:

  • Clearer information for faster decision-making

  • Reduced operational errors caused by attention shifts

  • Better human-machine collaboration and driver experience

4. Real-time voice alerts deliver proactive safety assistance

The system provides voice announcements for coupling distance, overspeed, stopping reminders, and alarm events. Even when drivers have limited visibility, heavy mental load, or fatigue, audio prompts help ensure critical safety information is still delivered in time.

Customer value:

  • Reduce delayed reactions and late braking

  • Improve information delivery in noisy and stressful environments

  • Better support for fatigue-prone and attention-limited scenarios

5. Automatic detection of personnel intrusion and derailers

Beyond distance measurement, the system can automatically identify personnel within the clearance boundary and derailers, issuing warnings through both the HUD and voice output.

Customer value:

  • Upgrade from simple anti-collision to multi-risk protection

  • Detect site hazards earlier and reduce accident risk

  • Provide more complete active safety coverage for shunting operations

6. 5G transmission and ground platform create a traceable data loop

After each shunting task, the system automatically uploads operation video, radar data, and related information to the ground server. Through the remote monitoring client, managers can review each operation video at any time, with speed, coupling distance, and alarm information overlaid on the video for post-event analysis, responsibility tracing, training, and process optimization.

Customer value:

  • Extend value from onsite operation to back-end management

  • Turn safety management from experience-driven to data-driven

  • Support acceptance, training, auditing, and incident review

  • Increase post-delivery service and operation value
